If you are interested in adopting please contact the AWLQ Gold Coast rehoming centre on 0755099000 or visit them on shelter Road at Coombabah For full animal listings please click here

Choose to adopt – there are so many beautiful animals looking for new homes there is no reason to buy from a puppyfarm, backyard breeder or petshop that promotes unethical breeding.

adventures of S&S

Like many people I love to travel. But when you own pets zipping away at a moments notice can sometimes be a little tricky.

I am lucky enough to have family that live close by that are as ‘in love’ with Sausage & Sanchez as I am, (maybe more). But when they are busy or can’t look after them it is always good to have a back up, – ENTER BarkRoyal

Barkroyal is a boutique pet resort that prides itself on the intamacy and hands on approach it provides for each and every animal in their care.  Located at Mt Nathan, (Nerang) they have 8 deluxe cat rooms, 16 luxury dog suites and 12 large standard dog suites. If you have two dogs from the same family they are able to ‘bunk together’ and keep each other company, (much to Hans & Odie’s delight). If your dog craves affection and likes other dogs Barkroyal also provide a ‘Find a Friend’ option. Which also keeps the cost of your pets stay down.

Owners Melody and Craig met through dog training and have always been very passionate about dogs. Their Border Collie ‘Maverick’ (a past guest of the AWLQ) is a featured dog in the Outback Spectaular show on the Gold Coast is super intelligent. Sitting, staying, begging, shaking, rolling over are just some of the tricks up this cute pooches proverbial sleeve.

I caught up with Melody and asked her the following questions.

Why did you decide to purchase the Barkroyal?

We had been looking for a business in the pet industry for a great length of time but were very particular in what we wanted. When the Barkroyal opportunity came up we knew it was right for us. The decision has been amazing and proven very rewarding. We have a fantastic staff and get to meet so many wonderful much loved pets. It’s been a blessing.

What is the average length of stay for a pet?

Length of stays can vary but we get a large number of weekend bookings, (Fridays to Mondays) or long weekend visits. We have had long stay bookings for three months or more, and also regular customers that come to stay every month.

Is there a particular breed that frequents Barkroyal more than others?

We have separate accommodation for small dogs and large dogs.

Our most common small dog breed would be Maltese and Maltese crosses.
Our next most popular pups would be Staffys and Labradors. We get a wide range from Huskies, Rottweillers and German Sheperds to Whippets, French Bulldogs and Tibetan Spaniels. We love them all.

Tell me about the suites

Our air conditioned luxury suites all have sliding doors to private outdoor patios. We have just updated all the tv’s to flatscreens and we have music piped throughout the kennels. We also have grooming on site, an on call vet and offer a chauffer pick up and drop off service.

Some of our extra activities include nature walks on our 12.5 acre rural retreat, beach visits and Playgroup (which is very popular). Cats enjoy Brush & Massage time.

Are vaccinations required?

We require all 3 puppy/kitten vaccinations plus any annual vaccination which are C5 or above for a dog and an F3 or above for a cat.

Does your pet have to be neutered?

We only accept desexed cats and prefer all dogs be desexed but we will accept non desexed dogs if they are not in season and not aggressive towards other dogs or humans.

What is the cost of boarding?

Although we are a five star accommodation our stays start from just $19 a day for cats and $28 for dogs.

We are very proud of Barkroyal and welcome inspections 10am-11am Monday to Saturday. Come and say hello!

BarkRoyal has just started a facebook page and is able to upload photos of your pet so you can keep up to date all the time. Like them on Facebook

Put your mind at ease next time you travel and check your pets in to the BarkRoyal. The hardest part will be making them leave when you come to pick them up. It’s puppy paradise!

Sitting Duck Squarkers by S&S

adventures of S&S, Odie Sanchez

If you own a Dachshund chances are you will be accustomed to having fluff strewn across your entire house living room  floor. I took it upon myself the other night to create something that

A: Does not have much fluff

B: Squeaks

C: Is small enough for Hans to play with

The result was ‘The Sitting Duck’. As soon as I Hanso heard the first squeak upon assembly he was on my lap watching me put together the finishing touches, (hence my stitches are a little wonky – they get better I promise).

Odie is a huge fan of the duck as well. He on the other hand is the golden child who likes to cuddle up with his toys and not rip them to pieces upon his first opportunity.

The Sitting Ducks will be available by emailing Sausageandsanchez@gmail.com for $8.50 and come in pink and blue. – Other colours coming soon.

I will let you know how long it takes for Hans to destroy, but the little ducky has lasted 24 hours of constant squeaking, (I still have the sound in my head).

Eyes on the Prize – Gimme, Gimme Gimme

Please excuse the wonky stitch – it is hard sew with a Sausage on your lap 🙂

Also available in Pink

Meet the Rotties

adventures of S&S

For the last 2 weeks Sausage & Sanchez have been playing big brothers to the adorable Olive and Carl. (Do you like the names? We took a poll on our FB page and asked our fans what we should call them Olive and Carl was the result).

Olive and Carl are just two of eight puppies in a litter that was surrendered to the AWLQ when their mother began to have seizures and stopped producing milk. They were two weeks at the time and I took them home for just one night and had to bottle feed them every two hours. (I only had them for the night becuase they were surrendered late in the day and it was too hard to find foster carers at such late notice). What an experience! It was amazing to hold such tiny babies in my hands knowing that if I could get them through the night, in the morning we would find them the best care possible to help them grow big and strong.

Fast forward 3 weeks and I was paying a visit to the foster house at the AWLQ and when I walked in to the office I was greeted by some chubby little pups who had just been dropped off for a vet check. I asked if I could foster them again and lucky for me I could. So back to the home of Sausage & Sanchez they went.

I have had the opportunity to spend a lot of time around Rottweilers and did not know much about their temprement. So I was interested to learn all about their little quirks. Carl and Olive are typical little puppies, so clumsy and cute. They sleep and wee and poop a lot. (love waking up every morning to a puppy crate full of poop – toilet training still a work in progress). But at only 6 weeks old I am starting to see lots of little Rottie traits. They are beginning to find their barks and surprise themselves when they let out a big growl. They are very strong and their paws are huge! They have just grown taller then Hans Sausage (much to his discust), and he is realising he is not able to steal their toys as easily as he could when I first brought them home. I have also noticed that Carl is starting to drewl a little after he has a big drink (common in rotties as they have loose jowls).

I have to say the more time I spend with them the harder I am finding it to think about the day I have to give them back so they can find their ‘forever homes’.

For those of you that are interested in knowing more about the Rottweiler breed here are a few facts:

  • Rottweilers are primarily known as one of the oldest herding breeds and are quite good at farm work. Rottweilers are also a  relatively healthy, disease-free breed but like lots of larger breeds are prone to hip dysplasia
  • Most Rottweilers have protective instincts toward strangers. They need extensive exposure to friendly people so they learn to recognise the normal behaviours of “good guys.” Then they can recognise the difference when someone acts abnormally. Without careful socialisation, they may be suspicious of everyone. However, note that many Rottweilers have minimal protective instincts and are big cuddlebugs who LOVE everyone
  • Rottweilers with loose jowls (typically large males) tend to slobber or drool after eating and drinking
  • They are easy to groom
  • They are very loyal and devoted to their family

A Day in the Big Blue

Hans Sausage, Odie Sanchez

What a glorious weekend!!! Having recently purchased a new boat from friends who are sadly leaving us for the grey skys of Melbourne we decided to spend the day on the water with family seeing what our new pontoon boat could do.

Hans Sausage and Odie Sanchez are often seen cruising the canals of the Gold Coast but it isn’t every day they go across the seaway in the big waves.. They coped quite well which was a relief to me because quite frankly I didn’t want to be spending my Sunday cleaning up puppy spew in our new craft. Check out our photos below:

Anchor Down  – Hans loves the water and will not sit still when boating. He is always bouncing around from one side to the other, tail wagging, nose sniffing and ears flying in the wind. funniest sight ever!

Ever Since Hans was little he has been out on the water – Hare are a couple of my favourite photos of him growing up on the big blue.

Odie is more the fashionista. He is quite happy to be laying back watching everyone do their thing. He does love boating apparal though – Don’t you just love his collar?!

Here is Odie after we took him for a little ride on our Jet Ski. He LOVED IT!

Happy FUNDAY SUNDAY 🙂

Hans works out

Hans Sausage, Notes from S&S, Uncategorized

My New Years resolutions this year was to be more creative and to get fit.. In April I started Sausage & Sanchez and I am so proud of what has become and so thankful to everyone’s support along the way. Especially those of you that have bought the S&S products.

The get fit side of my new years resolution is a work in progress and I have had so much fun pushing my body to achieve the strong healthy body I have always longed for. It is amazing how when you really want something the universe has a way of making it happen for you. (I will explain what I mean more below).

The year started out great. On the third of January I started Bikram Yoga at Mermaid Beach Thanks to good old SCOOPON I was able to try it out for a month unlimited for $50. I have always been pretty flexible and loved how challenging Bikram was. It was such a great escape and even though I left looking like a hot tomato and constantly soaked my car seat with sweat on the drive home, (I purchased a moped to avoid my car smelling like a garbage truck). I truly loved it.

For those of you that don’t know Bikram yoga is synthesised from traditional Hatha Yoga, runs for 90 minutes and consists of a set series of 26 postures and 2 breathing exercises. Sound easy? Here’ the kicker, it is practiced in a hot room where it is not uncommon for the thermostat to read 40 degrees Celsius.. YUK I hear you say. Well yes, it certainly does take some getting used to.

In the month I averaged 4 classes a week and I finished up with glowing skin and lots more energy. I could feel my body getting more toned but was not losing any weight nor losing any centremetres. I could feel myself getting bored as the movements in each class are always the same and 90minutes is a looooooooooooong time to spend in a hot room in the middle of Summer. So after a brief encounter with BIKRAM himself I thought it time to leave on a high and try something else.

Enter ESSENCE OF LIVING.

I L.O.V.E this place. Pilates Barre being my favourite. Again thank you Universe for the 21 day living social deal where I got to try unlimited classes, (and boy did I ever). I think I went every day for 21 days and then signed up again for a 3 month pass. The studios are beautiful and there are fresh flowers brought in weekly. You can even finish your class with a complimentary Apple to give you a quick boost of energy. Check out their blog for some awesome recipes.

If you haven’t tried Pilates Barre it was started by a Russian Ballet Dancer who developed a protocol for her own rehab after a serious spinal injury in the 1940’s. It integrates fat-burning interval training with muscle shaping isometrics to quickly and safely reshape the entire body. It uses a ballet barre, a yoga mat and hand weights  and boy does it help you find muscles you never knew existed.   This workout also requires mental focus which is great on the weekend when you want to block out work, and things you ‘have to do’ floating into your head.

With all this Yoga and Pilates I felt great and very elongated. I loved the chance to meditate and try new movements and to shut out the world for an hour. But I thought it was time to boost up the cardio and try something a little more ‘hard core’ and once again as soon as I asked the Universe provided.

“Congratulations Brooke you are the lucky winner of a 12 week challenger boot camp at Urban Babes“. OMG I think I have found my work out calling.

URBAN BABES

OMG, OMG, OMG, OMG OMG This is the best thing ever!

Urban Babes is about females who want to empower themselves, get fitter and improve their bodies by becoming stronger and more toned and I did just that. in 12 weeks I lost 26cm off of my body! Our trainer Revie is amazing and designs high intensity workouts that really get results. (I also love her because she owns a Sausage dog named Peach). I have met some great girls here and have never felt fitter. I am a convert!

The Babes. (I’m second from the right).

With all this energy and exercise on the brain I thought it only natural to make Hans Sausage a gym sweater. It is so cute, made from fleecy bulldog print he is snug as a bug and comfy as can be. I think I should change his name to Rocky he looks so tough.

You can order one for your pooch for just $11 by emailing brooke@sausageandsanchez.com

Thank you Universe for helping me stick to my goals and achieve so much in the last 7 months. I can’t wait to see what the rest of the year has in store.

Are you sticking to your NY resolution?

Lazy Sundaze

Hans Sausage, Notes from S&S

I love Sunday’s, especially when it starts with a trip to The Village Markets (TVM) with Hans Sausage and my good friend Magda. TVM is full of crafty goods and clothing, delicious food and fun people. I would love to have a Sausage & Sanchez stall there one day soon. It is also lots of fun because it is the one of few places on the Gold Coast where you can take your dog without raised eyebrows or cranky shop keepers and there is always lots of tail wagging and butt sniffing.. HANS LOVES IT! Check out photos here.

After the markets Magda and I took Hans to Burleigh Hill where he met an Australian Bulldog and proceeded to play hide and seek as he wasn’t sure if he would be squashed or eaten if he got too close.

When we got home I pulled out the sewing machine and inspired by the creatives at the markets got to work on a new coat for the little Lo-rider.

It is so hard to find a coat that fits Han’s body shape which was a big reason why I started Sausage & Sanchez. As it turns out I am not alone. Most of the Sausage & Sanchez fans are owners of dogs that are cross breeds with odd body shapes which leaves them with little options in the winter coat department.

I made a similar style of coat for Odie a couple of weeks ago and think it is a great design as it keeps their little chests warm. Hans lays on his tummy a lot so these style is ideal and I think he looks so handsome!

We will be selling this design in the S&S store from Monday for $55.

For custom sizing email details to brooke@sausageandsanchez.com

I think he likes his new threads.

What did you get up to with your poochies on this beautiful day?
