Gold Coast Pet Expo

adventures of S&S, Notes from S&S, Uncategorized

What a day we had at Varsity Lakes hanging out with the local pooches. The Gold Coast Pet Expo was in full swing with little lovelies in all shapes and sizes. It was so great to meet up with supporters of Sausage and Sanchez. My favorite of the day though had to be catching up with my little Olive, the Rottwieler pup we fostered a little while back. She is growing so quickly and her new proud parents have renamed her Ebony.

PRETTY FLUFFY: The 13 Project – Join Me!

I was browsing my one of my favourite dog blogs the other day when I came across something pretty special. The words on the page in beautiful colours were ones that I say to people who want to help animals but don’t know how on a daily basis.

What were these words I hear you ask? Well lucky for you I have shared them below.Image

Serena from Pretty Fluffy has designed Project 13 to encourage others to do 13 kind things for animals. This equates to one thing per week for the rest of the year.

Her words to describe how she came up with the concept are words I hear from members of the public daily.

“Is it just me, or as someone who cares about animals, do you get a little overwhelmed with all of the groups, causes and individuals out there that need your help? I sometimes get so overwhelmed I start to feel like things are completely hopeless.

Some days it seems for every photo I see of a rescue dog going to their new home, I see ten more to take their place in the shelter.

There are times when I think, if I was more influential… wealthier… better connected… I could make more of a difference. That little voice inside my head tells me no matter how hard I try I’m just one person. And one person can’t make a difference.

Well I’m here today to tell that voice they’re wrong. One person can make a difference, and I want YOU to join me. Join me in The 13 Project”.

If you love your pets and want to do more for the homeless animals in your community then get involved.

Hey there Delilah..

Delilah the Kelpie. What a delight.

As millions tune in to Big Brother to meet Delilah the Kelpie for the very first time tonight I am lucky to say I have spent the last few months getting to know her while she has been waiting for her new home at the Animal Welfare League of Queensland.

Delilah is cool as a cucumber and sooo much fun. She has made so many friends at the shelter and we can’t wait to see her win the hearts of Australia. (If only she could win the Big Brother prize money).

I wonder who she will bond with the most in the Big Brother house?? Josh, Michael or Sam? She does love the guys 🙂 Watch out Layla!

We took Delilah out for a photo shoot days before heading in to the Big Brother house with Diana from K9 Photography and she was such a star. Check out the images below.

Delilah is sure to get up to some mischief in the house. We know she is good at keeping secrets and is sure to be a confidant and great companion to everyone in the compound.

Hanging out around the office at the AWLQ

Good Luck Delilah!!! Have fun and we will see you on the other side.

adventures of S&S

Like many people I love to travel. But when you own pets zipping away at a moments notice can sometimes be a little tricky.

I am lucky enough to have family that live close by that are as ‘in love’ with Sausage & Sanchez as I am, (maybe more). But when they are busy or can’t look after them it is always good to have a back up, – ENTER BarkRoyal

Barkroyal is a boutique pet resort that prides itself on the intamacy and hands on approach it provides for each and every animal in their care.  Located at Mt Nathan, (Nerang) they have 8 deluxe cat rooms, 16 luxury dog suites and 12 large standard dog suites. If you have two dogs from the same family they are able to ‘bunk together’ and keep each other company, (much to Hans & Odie’s delight). If your dog craves affection and likes other dogs Barkroyal also provide a ‘Find a Friend’ option. Which also keeps the cost of your pets stay down.

Owners Melody and Craig met through dog training and have always been very passionate about dogs. Their Border Collie ‘Maverick’ (a past guest of the AWLQ) is a featured dog in the Outback Spectaular show on the Gold Coast is super intelligent. Sitting, staying, begging, shaking, rolling over are just some of the tricks up this cute pooches proverbial sleeve.

I caught up with Melody and asked her the following questions.

Why did you decide to purchase the Barkroyal?

We had been looking for a business in the pet industry for a great length of time but were very particular in what we wanted. When the Barkroyal opportunity came up we knew it was right for us. The decision has been amazing and proven very rewarding. We have a fantastic staff and get to meet so many wonderful much loved pets. It’s been a blessing.

What is the average length of stay for a pet?

Length of stays can vary but we get a large number of weekend bookings, (Fridays to Mondays) or long weekend visits. We have had long stay bookings for three months or more, and also regular customers that come to stay every month.

Is there a particular breed that frequents Barkroyal more than others?

We have separate accommodation for small dogs and large dogs.

Our most common small dog breed would be Maltese and Maltese crosses.
Our next most popular pups would be Staffys and Labradors. We get a wide range from Huskies, Rottweillers and German Sheperds to Whippets, French Bulldogs and Tibetan Spaniels. We love them all.

Tell me about the suites

Our air conditioned luxury suites all have sliding doors to private outdoor patios. We have just updated all the tv’s to flatscreens and we have music piped throughout the kennels. We also have grooming on site, an on call vet and offer a chauffer pick up and drop off service.

Some of our extra activities include nature walks on our 12.5 acre rural retreat, beach visits and Playgroup (which is very popular). Cats enjoy Brush & Massage time.

Are vaccinations required?

We require all 3 puppy/kitten vaccinations plus any annual vaccination which are C5 or above for a dog and an F3 or above for a cat.

Does your pet have to be neutered?

We only accept desexed cats and prefer all dogs be desexed but we will accept non desexed dogs if they are not in season and not aggressive towards other dogs or humans.

What is the cost of boarding?

Although we are a five star accommodation our stays start from just $19 a day for cats and $28 for dogs.

We are very proud of Barkroyal and welcome inspections 10am-11am Monday to Saturday. Come and say hello!

BarkRoyal has just started a facebook page and is able to upload photos of your pet so you can keep up to date all the time. Like them on Facebook

Put your mind at ease next time you travel and check your pets in to the BarkRoyal. The hardest part will be making them leave when you come to pick them up. It’s puppy paradise!

Sitting Duck Squarkers by S&S

adventures of S&S, Odie Sanchez

If you own a Dachshund chances are you will be accustomed to having fluff strewn across your entire house living room  floor. I took it upon myself the other night to create something that

A: Does not have much fluff

B: Squeaks

C: Is small enough for Hans to play with

The result was ‘The Sitting Duck’. As soon as I Hanso heard the first squeak upon assembly he was on my lap watching me put together the finishing touches, (hence my stitches are a little wonky – they get better I promise).

Odie is a huge fan of the duck as well. He on the other hand is the golden child who likes to cuddle up with his toys and not rip them to pieces upon his first opportunity.

The Sitting Ducks will be available by emailing for $8.50 and come in pink and blue. – Other colours coming soon.

I will let you know how long it takes for Hans to destroy, but the little ducky has lasted 24 hours of constant squeaking, (I still have the sound in my head).

Eyes on the Prize – Gimme, Gimme Gimme

Please excuse the wonky stitch – it is hard sew with a Sausage on your lap 🙂

Also available in Pink

The little dog with the BIG attitude

Odie Sanchez, Uncategorized

Odie Allan Sanchez – What am I going to do with you?

When I adopted Odie a little over a year ago, he was as timid as a mouse, would do anything to please anyone and was snugly to boot. In the past year I am fairly certain I have turned him into a ferocious monster! In my attempt to give him the life that I felt he deserved after being left abandoned on the streets of Logan,I think I may have made him feel like he was the Alpha dog – and in doing so the terrible Chi from within has started to emerge. Other people call it LDS or Little Dog Syndrome, I call it failing to be a good alpha leader.

I am not one to stereotype a breed which is why I am blaming myself for Odie’s recent bad behaviour. In the past year he has bitten just about everyone I know, (myself included) and I have decided I need serious help…

I have been doing a little bit of Googling this afternoon and that combined with my current knowledge, (which isn’t too much more than having Cesar Milan recorded on my Foxtel) I am going to attempt to fix my dog.

Something I found interesting was the following info about the signs to look for to see if your dog is scared, anxious or ready to bite.

  • Yawning when the dog is not tired
  • Licking the lips (or just flicking the tongue in and out of the mouth) when there is no food around
  • Panting even though it’s not warm
  • Raising one paw and holding it up tentatively
  • Turning the head away
  • Curving the body or turning the whole body away
  • Blinking rapidly
  • Lowering the head
  • Tucking the tail between the legs
  • Trying to move away from a situation.
  • Freezing in place (standing very stiffly)
  • Staring
  • Raising of the hackles (this is when the hair on the back of the neck, and sometimes even the whole spine, stands up)

When dogs are cornered or otherwise forced to remain in a scary situation despite giving the signals mentioned above, they may escalate to more obvious signals, such as the following:

  • Drawing their lips back to show their teeth
  • Flattening their ears back
  • Growling
  • Snarling
  • Lunging

The Animal Welfare League of Qld (AWLQ) has a new owner support that has loads of information on dog traits and training which I will be researching and incorporating. Click here to see more
I have also found a website on dog aggression and I am hoping it will help me help Odie. Click Here to see more

I will keep you posted on his progress. Do you have any suggestions on how to train ‘small dogs’?

Side note: how cool is the nail polish below? Appropriately called ‘my chihuahua bites’. I think I MUST buy some…
